Gogol Bordello Gears Up For Bonnaroo

A thirtysomething Ukrainian who discovered his gypsy Roma roots through his grandmother, he has lived in New York since the early nineties, plying his unique brand of punk rock inspired by the likes of Fugazi and Bad Brains fused with an Eastern European musical tradition, to create a colourful blast of attitude. Originally creating a buzz through his legendary anything-goes DJ sets at a little Bulgarian Bar called Mehanata, he formed the band Gogol Bordello and quickly gained a devoted audience and an underground reputation that simply couldn’t be ignored.

Now with their new album Super Taranta! Produced by the Bad Seeds and PJ Harvey cohort Victor Van Vugt it cements the sheer visceral punk power of their last album Gypsy Punks and adds more gypsy-tinged melody, more catchy good-time choruses, more versatility, and more potential hit singles.

The star of the film, Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz, was there and Madonna thanked Liev Schreiber and his pregnant wife Naomi Watts for.

You think he stands stoically in front of his microphone like Thom Yorke? Been fantastic man. Doing multiple nights in the cities and bombing people with new material. Is that going to be an expansion of your past work or something completely new? The writing process is well in the middle of it. Do you collaborate with the rest of the band in your writing process? I collaborate on arrangement a lot, which is why you read: words by Eugene and music by Eugene and Gogol Bordello.

I write the songs but because there are so many different instruments and with the process of arraignment, things can really expand. So please talk about back in your childhood, the Refugee Relocation program and your move from Kiev to the U. How did it affect your creative experience? By the time I was done with the Refugee program I could swear in five different languages only because I was living with Czech and Romanian and with Albanian and so on and so forth.

So, of course, that developed more to play with as I met many different kinds of people. And that brought new color for me right away you know. And these were not people on the calmer side of things, these were pretty much the more wilder kind of ethnicities.

Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz to appear in Madonna movie

Clearly, they have a gifted and patient tour manager. Hutz himself has hopscotched from the Ukraine to New York to Brazil. Rick Rubin is known for his unconventional approach. What was it like working with him? Shortly after we met with Rick, he invited me over for me to show the new songs I had been writing. From then on that kind of hanging out became regular.

Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz (still) loves to play the punk rock for the and occasionally cavorted with, among other celebrities, Madonna.

Gogol Bordello strike the pose. It seems that for Madonna, popular culture is just one great big pick’n’mix counter. Throughout her career she’s been continuously grabbing sweeties from different shelves, chewing them up and then spitting them out again when something fresher, tastier and flashier comes along. Now, she’s after rowdy gypsy folk-rockers Gogol Bordello. Famed for their crazed live shows which often border on the certifiable , the gossips went bonkers when Madge was spotted at their gig at London’s Koko a few months back.

Eugene Hutz since revealed – to this very blog – that he’s got the lead role in the short film she’s directing, Filth and Wisdom , along with the rest of the band. But why? Just like she did with her adopted son David Banda, Madonna seems on a mission to help out those she thinks are needier than herself – even if they’re doing just fine on their own thank you very much.

So come tomorrow, Madonna will be performing at the London leg of Al Gore’s Live Earth concert with a group of ageing eastern Europeans who look a bit like the Levellers after two rounds with a bumper bottle of White Lightning, and who were once called Kafka Whorehouse.

Filth and Wisdom

It can be said that Gogol Bordello has been representing the voice of all minorities all at once, a voice that comes from a real, poetic and deep place. Friend and fan Tom Morello had suggested that Rubin check out the band, whose rollicking bonfire-like live performances have become the stuff of legend, featuring a veritable rock and roll army of musicians and dancers.

I got very excited precisely about that. Songwriting was always my religion. For Rick, it is all about the soul entity of the song.

Gogol Bordello, Rick Rubin team up for “Hustle”

Before he started palling around with Madonna and starring in movies with Elijah Wood, Eugene Hutz, the handlebar-mustachioed frontman of the band Gogol Bordello, was just a simple, self-described gypsy punk; before his band started selling out megaclubs and European festivals, he had a weekly D. For several years in the early s, the Ukrainian-born, charismatic and propaganda-spouting Mr.

Some fans see her as a major creative force in pop music, constantly reinventing herself and pushing the envelope. Others are turned off by the self-importance and calculation she seems to emit. About the nicest thing you can say about her movie career, on the other hand, is that it’s not nearly so polarizing. From “Swept Away” to “Shanghai Surprise” to “Dick Tracy,” the general consensus is that Madonna is better off without the movies, and the movies are better off without Madonna.

This week, as Madonna’s new greatest-hits album “Celebration” gets a major promotional push, her first directorial effort, “Filth and Wisdom,” also is being released on DVD in a much more low-key way. Low-key, that is, in the sense that Madonna’s name on the DVD cover is in inch-high letters, dwarfing even the title of the movie. That’s fitting, though, because without Madonna’s name on top, it’s hard to imagine that such a weak indie film would make much of a splash.

The purple-clad punk discussed his global-tribal mentality, the best morning of his life, and dressing up like Margaret Thatcher with a moustache. Women are always an inspiration to me, whether the shit they do is cool or fucking weird. EH: So you want me to elaborate on that or what? EH: Thing is that we met very casually because there was no managers and agents involved, and that pretty much set up the vibe for the rest of the things we collaborated on.

I dunno. Every time we [Gogol Bordello] played in London, there was a rumor she would be coming to our show, something like that, and eventually it happened.

Before he started palling around with Madonna and starring in movies with Elijah Wood, Eugene Hutz, the handlebar-mustachioed frontman of.

For the past two hours, Hutz has led his band through a turbocharged set of international dance music, mashing up punk, klezmer, ska, polka, samba, salsa and reggae into the distinct sound that has made Gogol Bordello the hottest global touring act to come out of New York in the past decade. And he did it all while maintaining a plus-show-per-year touring schedule and relocating from New York to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he moved to live with his girlfriend, Diana, a Romanian samba dancer who inspired some of his most emotional lyrics.

Rubin first discovered the group when Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello texted him from a show to exclaim that Gogol Bordello was the greatest band in the world. Rubin views the relationship as the beginning of an entirely new approach to recording for Gogol Bordello. The rest comes with that. Our deal is very independent. I came far too long a way to do something as funky as a deal in which recording artists share not just revenue from album sales but concert, merchandise and other earnings with their label in exchange for more comprehensive career support.

In his lyrics, Hutz repeatedly returned to the themes of humiliation, discrimination and fear that are often the hallmarks of the immigrant experience.
